A refractometre is an optical precision instrument for the exact determination of the optical density or the refraction index of a liquid.
As the refraction index of salt water depends on the salinity of the solution, the refractometre is very handy to measure the salinity in salt tanks quickly and exactly, above all.
The company Sybon produces one of the highest-quality refractometre for aquaristics.
By only using a few drops of water, one can easily detect the salinity within seconds. The refractometre displays this value either as the absolute salinity) per mille (‰, ppt) or the relative density (kg/l compared to 20°C water).
A refractometre is basically always more exact and mechanically less damageable than an aerometre.
